About the Event
In Motivational Interviewing practice we act as a guide or coach, weaving relational and technical skills to support our clients through the process of change and growth. This might involve offering information, resources, advice, suggestions, or feedback. A common misperception of MI practice is the belief that as MI practitioners, we are not allowed to offer our ideas, suggestions or advice, but in fact, people can find these things helpful in guiding them towards change.
During this class, the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) manual will be used as a guide for us to understand the skills used in an MI conversation to offer information, advice, suggestions, or feedback. By avoiding MI non-adherent behaviors and by instead utilizing MI adherent behaviors like seeking collaboration, persuading with permission, and emphasizing autonomy, we can improve our skillfulness in MI practice.
